Carols by Candlelight

The Rotary Club of Hermanus presents an evening of carols in the Old Harbour arena on the last Friday before Christmas. Bring your picnic basket and chairs and enjoy the sing-a-long. Entrance is by way of a donation in aid of charity for your “candle in a bottle” and hymn sheet.

Flower Festival

An annual Spring Flower Festival in August is hosted in the Fernkloof Hall and includes local arts and crafts, with the main purpose a colourful and spectacular showcase of local fynbos arranged in a display that will amaze every onlooker.

Hawston Sea Festival

This festival is held annually at the beginning of December at the Hawston camping site next to the ocean. Fresh crayfish, perlemoen, paella and snoek are available and hundreds of festival-goers from all over the Peninsula stream to the quiet fishing village to enjoy the delicious delicacies. There is entertainment for young and old and festival goers can take a dip in the Olympic size swimming pool.

Kalfie Fees

The Hermanus Times Kalfiefees which borrows its name from the Whale Festival, was started to bring a cultural experience to the local communities – including Hawston. The mostly Afrikaans festival, which is held around National Women’s day in August, offers some of the best national and local theatrical productions. Festival-goers can enjoy local cuisine and view and purchase the work of local crafters.

Whale Festival

The annual Whale Festival is held to celebrate the arrival of the magnificent Southern Right Whales that come to Walker Bay to calve and mate. For a few days each September, Hermanus is transformed as thousands of visitors arrive to enjoy arts and the enviro-experience that is the Whale Festival. Around 30 shows – usually the most successful productions from the country’s two largest arts festivals – are staged each year and include theatrical pieces as well as classical and popular music.

The Festival offers a variety of eco-environmental activities; a children’s festival; an arts ramble that takes visitors to the studios and galleries of local artists, and other live entertainment. There’s also plenty of action for the health- conscious with five sporting events, namely a triathlon, half-marathon, fun cycle ride and soccer day.

Wine & Food Festival

Since its inception in 1997 the Hermanus Food and Wine Fair, which coincides with the Kalfiefees, has become an important event in the Western Cape wine industry calendar. Visitors can chase away the winter chills by sampling mouth-watering wine and other products from over 30 exhibitors. It includes some of the Cape’s top wine estates as well as the producers of speciality foods and other delicacies.

African Market

A variety of craft markets can be found in and around Hermanus. There is a daily craft/flea market above the Old Harbour housed in iron sheds on Market Square where local and African traders sell their goods.

Meander through the Onrus Market on the first Saturday of every month at the De Wet Hall from 9h00-12h00.

Saturdays are busy market days with the Hermanuspietersfontein Boeremark in the Hemel-en-Aarde village which is open from 9h00- 13h00

Every weekend, weather permitting, a bustling market can be found at Lemm’s Corner from 8h30 to15h00.

The Hermanus Country Market is held at the Hermanus Cricket Club and is open from 9h00 to 13h00 throughout the year, except for July 2018
